A huge thank you to the Eastern Daily Press for featuring me in its flagship newspaper and regional Norfolk titles as part of the Born & Read in Norfolk campaign.
I really enjoyed talking to Charles Bliss about my books, the importance of encouraging children to read, and why I firmly believe there is no such thing as a wrong book for a child.
For me, reading should be about discovery, enjoyment and finding the stories that speak to each individual child. Whether they are drawn to a particular subject, captivated by the illustrations or simply intrigued by a cover, the important thing is that they want to pick up a book and turn the pages.
As I said in the interview: “Reading isn’t a test. Let your child choose books because they love the subject, the illustrations, or even just because the cover makes them want to pick the book up and find out more.”
It is a message that sits at the heart of everything I do as an author. My own books are richly illustrated stories for readers aged 7–11, featuring magical cats, a very special miniature schnauzer, and stories that explore some of the things children encounter as they grow up.
