September days

Oh autumn, how I love thee… The bounty in the hedgerows, that amazing light as the sun begins its descent in the sky, and that slight chill in the air that makes you begin to think about log fires and big bowls of veggie-packed stews and soups. There is no doubt that 2020 has been …

100 days of lockdown

by Samantha Mattocksupdated on October 6, 2021June 30, 2020 Leave a Comment on 100 days of lockdown

Today marks 100 days of lockdown here in the UK. I have just written my latest column for Norfolk Online and in that I lament the loss of one of life’s greatest pleasures – one that we definitely all took for granted – and that is a cup of coffee with a friend. Whether spontaneous …

The Norfolk Foodie Series

by Samantha Mattocksupdated on October 6, 2021June 20, 2020 Leave a Comment on The Norfolk Foodie Series

With lockdown resulting in all horse shows around the world being on a pause, and printing of The Arabian Breeders’ Magazine on hold for the time being, I have had the luxury of time to explore other avenues in my life. One of these has been a long-held desire to conduct a series of interviews …

Beautiful June

by Samantha Mattocksupdated on June 1, 2020June 1, 2020 Leave a Comment on Beautiful June

Pinch punch, first of the month. I hope that everybody is keeping safe and well. As we all know, we are living in challenging times, and I find it easier to concentrate on what I have, rather than have not, right now. We are all seeing so much change and uncertainty, and for me, I …

A collection of years

by Samantha Mattocksupdated on October 6, 2021May 2, 2020 Leave a Comment on A collection of years

For The Arabian Magazine Collectors’ Edition, I used to do a feature called The Editor’s Year, which was a summary of my year – the horses I had seen, the places I had been, and some of the many magical moments along the way. These used to be on my old website, but rather than …

Ostara blessings to you all! Yes, spring is here i Ostara blessings to you all! Yes, spring is here in the northern hemisphere! Well, it will be around 2.46pm today, in the UK at least. This is the perfect time of year to bring new dreams and visions to life - what will your dream be?

May Ostara bring joy and easiness into your lives, may her fertility be passed over to you and may your dreams, ideas, wishes, plans ripen and bear new fruits.
May the loveliness of spring open your hearts and may you understand the beauty of being and take it in.
Full of strength and new energy you shall walk into the brightness of the awakening spring and you shall leave the darkness of the past time behind.
Let go all former burdens and get rid of the ballast still hindering you.
Free and with new strength your feet shall carry you towards dawn.
May Ostara bless you all!

Show me you're a writer without telling me you're Show me you're a writer without telling me you're a writer...

My trusty fountain pen decided to leak today, covering me and my baby pink jumper in black ink. I had the line for a poem in my head, and wanted to get something down before I left the office. I wasn't expecting to also be showered in ink, but it's a hazard I'll happily take.

So much to be grateful for this Monday. Even the ink stains on clothes and fingers. Especially the ink stains on clothes and fingers.

This morning was all about @huggerslongstratton - This morning was all about @huggerslongstratton - editing the next Middle Grade book, meeting @michellemouldartist and watching her at work, plus enjoying this scrummy cheese and tomato bage washed down with mint teal.

Today was all about being gentle, and this was a perfect pause. Much needed.

World Book Day may have been and gone, but parents World Book Day may have been and gone, but parents are still sending me photos of their children dressed up as Mister Mishkins!

The first photo is C, and the attention to detail in the costume is amazing - the key, the handkerchief, the tail!

Then we have Charlie, whose school asks everyone to go in wearing pyjamas and to bring their favorite book.

As an author, this is everything. That children love my words and world so much that they want to share their love with others. Both children took The Magic of Mister Mishkins to school, and C even read to some nursery children! Oh, my heart...!

Thank you to their mums for sharing these with me, and giving me permission to share with you.
I needed this. A very slow and gentle few hours wi I needed this. A very slow and gentle few hours with @paulasmith.2025 including this perfect chocolate and blackcurrant cake from @earshamstreetcafe

It was exactly what a chocolate cake should be - rich, nuggets of chocolate throughout, and zingy with the blackcurrant bursts.

I've fancied a proper chocolate cake for a while now, and this absolutely ticked all the boxes.

Ah, la luna - I have missed you. With the February Ah, la luna - I have missed you. With the February rains, it was hard to see the moon most night's, so it makes tonight's 99% waxing gibbous especially beautiful.

Tomorrow night is the full moon - the worm moon, complete with a total lunar eclipse. Time to make wishes, tread carefully, and lay the delicate fabric of your dreams.
