  • Happy Yule - the winter solstice is here. I love this verse below, that acknowledges the darkness of midwinter. "The longest night has come once more, the sun has set, and darkness fallen. The trees are bare, the earth asleep, and the skies are cold and black. Yet tonight we rejoice, in this longest night, embracing the darkness that enfolds us.   • One week until Christmas Day - and I'd love to know what your favourite Christmas carol is, and why. Mine is The First Nowell, as it was always written in my hymn book at school. I loved singing descant with my friends, and a few of us would attempt this each year, even when the descant wasn't meant to be sung. More evocatively, The First Nowell is also a key part of Olympia. I remember, as a child, being bundled up in blankets and allowed to come downstairs and watch the showjumping, and then I'd get my first glimpse of Santa as he came into the ring and The First Nowell would be played. For me, it just isn't Christmas until I have seen 'Olympia Santa' - now the London International - and curiously, I would end up knowing John Parker, who drove Santa's sleigh into the Olympia Arena.
